From Burnout to Blossoming: My Art and Health Journey
My Corporate job was eliminated along with my peers. My Mom’s graphic design work was replaced by AI. Both of us were considering what was next, and one day…she asked me, if I would be interested in taking a Surface Pattern Design course called Immersion by Bonnie Christine. I didn’t know anything about it…but I had time and I wanted to support her journey. Now, over a year from when we started, I have realized it’s as much about my journey as hers.
This last year has been a journey of reconnecting, discovering, and appreciating. Reconnecting with my purpose, half of my brain that has been underutilized, my hobbies, and my joy in caring for my family. Discovering how wisely designed we are and yet when it comes caring for ourselves, our whole being, our health and nutrition, there is so much more to learn. My mom had a debilitating health issue which brought this starkly to life. In the business world, we say, that we can only improve what we measure. I would say the same thing when it comes to health, yet our KPIs (key performance indicators or metrics) for our bodies and our preventative care has been lacking in the US. Not to mention our diets. More to come here on the discoveries we have made…
Below is my inspiration board for my first collection of patterns, “Stop and Smell the Roses.” In all my busyness, my Grandpa used to remind me, never wanting me to miss out on the precious moments of life. Over the years, especially as I started working, became a wife and mom, I have learned to treasure and remember his guidance. I hear him say, slow down and appreciate life that is before you, the people, the beauty in all the little things. Enjoy the moments. As I’ve learned to slow down, and appreciate life that is in front of me, it has enriched my time with my husband and kids, they have even participated in everything from noticing and capturing the beauty they are seeing to making a video to share my story. Come along as I share my journey as a wife, mom of two kids, budding artist, entrepreneur, working parent, lover of Christ…many hats, but one blossoming person.
